LoveHowTo Dating Directory: The Personal Touch

heartNot all matchmaking is done virtually. Some companies still do it the old-fashioned way, with personal interviews and other screening methods. With these services you give up the kind of control that access to millions of profiles provides. But theoretically you make up for it with more accurate matches and some (expensive) hand-holding.

Audience & Features: straight, personal interview

Pricing
3 months:$2900
6 months:$4800 (Los Angeles only)
12 months:$15,000 (Los Angeles only)
9 months $8800 anywhere in the US. All packages include coaching and guaranteed introductions
Try
Cupid's Coach
It began as a coaching service that helps with photos, profile-writing and dating generally through phone consultations, teleseminars and audio CDs. Now, in addition to those services, Cupid's Coach also provides a traditional matchmaking service: a very expensive service, with lots of hand-holding. If you're in Southern California you go in for a personal meeting; elsewhere in the country you are interviewed on the phone. Also holds events in southern California.

Audience & Features: straight, personal interview

Pricing
Expensive
Try Elite Personal Search
A matchmaking service. Company representatives personally meet and pre-screen every applicant. Locations in six California cities, five Canadian cities, plus Phoenix, Boston and Denver. Each member has a "personal matchmaker" to consult.

Audience & Features: straight, personal interview

Pricing
Expensive

Great Expectations
Yes, they're still around! The video dating service of the '80s has rebranded itself. It's still hands-on, requiring a visit to one of their 56 locations.

Audience & Features: age, straight, personal interview

Pricing
Expensive
Try
FindRomance.com
A matchmaking service for the over 30 crowd. Site forces you to provide physical and email address as well as phone numbers before you can find out anything about pricing, cities served or success stories (always dubious anyway).

Audience & Features: straight, events, personal interview, video

Pricing
3 months:$47.85
6 months:$77.70
12 months:$119.40

Try
Love Access
3 million members. Offers a "personal matchmaker" who acts as a middleman to connect matches so users don't have to give out phone numbers. Exclusive singles events. Owned by eLove.

Audience & Features: straight, events, screened, personal interview

Pricing
Estimated fee $3000-4000. Ouch.
Try
The Right One
It starts with an online questionnaire, and requires a background check and an in-person meeting at one of their approximately locations around the U.S. So you know the person you're meeting isn't wanted on an outstanding warrant, but otherwise unclear if it's worth the substantial added cost beyond internet dating. Especially since they won't tell you what it costs until they get you into the office in person to give you the pitch. Fill in the questionnaire and you'll get a call from someone perky and ready to pitch, but unwilling to talk pricing with you. Members are guaranteed a minimum number of dates with people who match their dating criteria - which they should be at these prices - but no guarantees you'll hit it off.

Audience & Features: straight, events, screened, personal interview

Pricing
Estimated fee $3000-4000. Ouch.
Try
Together
Another name for "The Right One" matchmaking service.

Audience & Features: straight, events, screened, personal interview

Pricing
Estimated fee $3000-4000. Ouch.
Try Serious Singles Dating
How many names does this company utilize - and more importantly, why? This is the same exact company as The Right One and Together Dating, offering the same service for the same price. What's the point of the name game?
