LoveHowTo Dating Directory: Screened
You can't be too careful these days. If you want to make sure your dates are who they say they are, try a service that screens its members. Whether a credit check, a full background check, an in-person interview or just validating name and age, sites in the Screened category provide an extra level of security.
Audience & Features: million+ members, straight, gay, lesbian, screened, video Pricing
Try True 11 million members. You must enter a credit card to join and receive a seven-day free trial. While you might not want to give True your credit card info, the site's advantage is that it screens all communicating members against criminal records databases. This means a much higher likelihood that people are who they say they are. Free (and time-consuming) compatibility test endorsed by Psychology Today identifies 99 factors found in successful relationships. Video chat and private chat. Lots of action here, but caliber of members seems slightly lower than average. True aggressively follows up to make sure you find someone, though.

Try eHarmony 5 million members. In-depth (almost 500 redundant questions – be sure to answer consistently or you’ll be rejected!) personality test required as part of signup. Profiles use canned text (none of the members' own words) and are not accessible – you only get to see the ones eHarmony selects for you. You must describe yourself as single (e.g., not "Separated") to qualify. If you click "Separated" you'll still get the whole massive questionnaire, but then eHarmony will refuse to let you participate in the dating service, instead steering you toward their online counseling service. And then they'll send you endless emails nagging you to use them to help put your marriage back together. And your personality test results can get you rejected even if you are single. Assuming you're accepted, if you cancel your dating membership you'll be bombarded with emails saying NOW they've found you the right one. Marriage-focused and claims to be results-oriented, although our experiences showed those results are more money for eHarmony and difficulty extricating your credit card from the relationship. Primarily but not exclusively Christian. Time.com named it one of the 5 Worst Webites for "its power to cause utter despair." As a result of a lawsuit filedby the state of New Jersey, eHarmony will launch a same-sex matching service, called Compatible Partners, by March 31, 2009.

It starts with an online questionnaire, and requires a background check and an in-person meeting at one of their approximately locations around the U.S. So you know the person you're meeting isn't wanted on an outstanding warrant, but otherwise unclear if it's worth the substantial added cost beyond internet dating. Especially since they won't tell you what it costs until they get you into the office in person to give you the pitch. Fill in the questionnaire and you'll get a call from someone perky and ready to pitch, but unwilling to talk pricing with you. Members are guaranteed a minimum number of dates with people who match their dating criteria - which they should be at these prices - but no guarantees you'll hit it off.

Try IWantU.com Formerly LoveDiner.com. Search results seem completely nonresponsive in the categories of age, geography. Also has intimate/sex and BDSM sites. There's just something weird about it all.
|

It's new and sparsely populated with an emphasis on the Florida market, where the company is based. There's no way to search by geography or any other variable besides age, very few members have photos, and the site is frustrating to use with limited functionality. Despite the focus on safety inherent in its name, only a small fraction of SaferDates.com members are Level 1 verified, meaning they've had background checks to validate their identity and lack of police record. We couldn't find any members who had gone through Level 2 verification, which involves fingerprinting. Really, if you're that paranoid, online dating isn't for you.

This site charges a fee to validate your profile, then is free to use. They makes introductions for you. You can browse member profiles, but you won't find everyone that way because many profiles are hidden. Browsing allows you to contact (and be contacted by) people who are not technically perfect matches. So you're taking your chances that way! (Unlike the other way?) You can have up to five introductions at a time. You must match the other person's requirements as well as their matching yours, so site-generated matches can take awhile. One more note: SantaMatch really milks that Santa metaphor: Beware the ho ho ho's and references to the northern sky.
