How to Select a Gift for Your Man

  • 3votes

Women are instinctive gift buyers. They’re hard-wired to snatch up the right Christmas present in February if that’s when they find it. They have special gift closets. But even the gift-aware sometimes hit a brick wall. The most daunting gift challenge facing a woman? Buying for her man.

Men don’t drop hints as well as women. As a consequence, they often end up disappointed by the obvious: golf accessories, Sinatra CDs, cologne, even ties.

Break the cycle! Surprise him with something outside the typical gift box.

Something Sporty

OK, so maybe he is a golfer. That doesn’t mean he needs new balls. How about golf darts? They combine the strategy of golf with the danger of darts! Other ideas? A hydration vest for a runner. A cool bike accessory.  Clothing, accessories or memorabilia from a favorite sports team, if you’re not already sick of that Favre jersey.

A Cool Gadget

Men like to consider themselves gadget gurus, so you’ll have to stay away from the everyday items like cell phones and universal remotes, iPod speakers and laptop bags (although there’s always something new in that category, if you dare). How about something fun, like a pod-based coffeemaker, so easy even your bleary-eyed man, who spent all night pleasuring you, could use it? GPS for an outdoorsman? (Note: this is not a gift you should give as a passive-aggressive way of getting back at him for never asking directions.) There’s even GPS for golfers, if you want to spend a lot and encourage his golf habit.

Health-oriented gadgets show you want him to live longer. Try a heart rate monitor watch to track calories burned during a workout, a speed and distance watch for running, or a device that lowers blood pressure through therapeutic breathing. There was a rumor flying around the internet that looking at women's breasts could prolong a man's life by getting his heart pumping. Even though it was discounted by Snopes.com, you could still flash him, just in case. Not exactly a gadget, but nothing he'd complain about either.

Did he always want to be an astronaut? Get him a telescope and plan a romantic evening under the constellations. Go for one that’s lightweight so he can take it anywhere and see galaxies far, far away. Another option is binoculars, some of which have the  desirable image stabilization. If he’s a concert-goer but always in the cheap seats, try a pair designed to make him feel like he’s front row center.

Entertainment

Give tickets to a special concert, sporting event or play, with a note saying how much you would love to take him, and maybe hinting at a special nightcap after the show. For the personal touch, make a mixtape (OK, CD or playlist) with songs that mean a lot to you as a couple.

It’s All About Him

Get him a close shave. The Art of Shaving combines traditional barber services with aromatherapy skin treatments. Indulge him with the Royal Shave, which uses special oils and a straight-edge razor. Top off with a makeout session to encourage continued smoothness.

If you’re an artist you can pay tribute creatively. If not, pay one to do it for you. A couple of fun ideas: A custom bobblehead or a personalized comic book about his own superhuman exploits. A cheaper option is a home-made coupon for a special time together at a later date. It can be as tame as offering to do his chore for him (maybe he always washes the dishes…yeah, right!) and as risque as a pledge to perform the act you know most gets his juices going.

Which brings us to…

Something Racy

When you can’t be together, remind him of you with a cast of his favorite body part. For an experience the two of you can share together, try some sexy pampering. Many spas offer couples packages. You can soak in a tub, go under a rain shower or into plunge pools or a mud bath together, then get separate massages. It’s incredibly sexy and decadent to share this experience. You are encouraged to make your own happy ending.
